General information

IMAT-MSCs or intercellular mitochondrial transfer-assisted therapeutic mesenchymal stromal (stem) cells are genetically engineered human bone marrow MSCs with a simultaneous knockdown of BAK and overexpression of MCL1. When co-cultured with SARS-CoV-2-infected or NSP4/ORF9b-transduced airway epithelial cells (A549), intercellular mitochondrial transfer via tunnelling nanotubes was observed between IMAT-MSCs and A549 cells. This resulted in alleviation of pro-inflammatory and pro-apoptic release of mitochondrial DNA (Faizan et al., 2022).
